How the Kolkata Scrap Market Actually Works
Who buys, what competes, and where the freight sits
Kolkata collects; Durgapur melts. The yards of Howrah, Liluah, Tangra and the Belgharia–Barrackpore belt aggregate material that travels 170 km up NH19 to the induction furnaces of Durgapur and Asansol. A Kolkata quote is the Durgapur furnace price less that freight and the aggregator’s margin, and it moves a day behind Durgapur.
Coal-belt sponge is the competitor. Durgapur sits on the Raniganj coalfield; its furnaces blend CDRI and PDRI priced DAP Durgapur by BigMint, and when sponge is ₹4,000–5,000/MT under melting scrap the appetite for ordinary mixed loha falls. Clean sheet, end cut and heavy melting from Howrah’s engineering works still clear; mixed and moisture-heavy material from post-monsoon demolition does not.
Howrah’s foundries make cast iron a separate market here. Unlike most Indian cities, Kolkata has deep demand for foundry-grade cast from the Howrah–Liluah cluster, so clean machinery cast and pipe can fetch more here than in a furnace town. Keep cast separate from steel at the yard; blending it into a ferrous load throws away that premium.

Three things are true across India this week and apply here. Semis firmed first – MS ingot is ₹1,200–2,000/MT higher than a week ago in six tracked markets and BigMint reported blast-furnace rebar rising on low mill inventories – so furnace bids for prepared scrap are recovering with a lag. Imports are not competing: containerised HMS at $365–375/t CFR lands near ₹38,200/MT and mills are buying need-based. And the recovery is from a low base: mills had cut procurement 50–60% in late September on oversupply (BigMint, 23 Sept), so two weeks of small rises is a direction, not yet a rally.
