Scrap Dealers in Alibaug: Why Most of the Value Here Is Not Iron

Alibaug is not an industrial town and pretending otherwise leads sellers here badly astray. There is no MIDC estate throwing off tonnes of heavy melting scrap, no rolling mill, no re-roller within an hour. What Alibaug has instead is a weekend-home construction economy, a working fishing fleet, a hospitality belt that refurbishes constantly, and one large fertiliser plant at Thal. Every one of those produces scrap, and in three cases out of four the money is in non-ferrous rather than iron. Sellers who treat an Alibaug clearance as an iron sale routinely hand over the most valuable part of the load for free.

Alibaug’s Three Scrap Streams

Villa and second-home work is the biggest by volume and the most misunderstood. A demolition or major renovation at Awas, Nagaon, Kihim, Varsoli or Mandwa typically yields MS grilles and gates, window and door frames, water tanks, staircase and railing sections, roofing sheet, and reinforcement bar out of concrete. That is the ferrous half. The other half is where the value sits: aluminium sliding window and door sections, copper wiring pulled from walls, split air-conditioning units with copper coils, brass taps and sanitary fittings, and occasionally a stainless steel kitchen fit-out. Aluminium sections alone are worth several times what MS grille pays per kilo, and a house full of them adds up fast.

Marine and fishing material is the stream nobody writes about and the one with the highest per-kilo values in the district. Alibaug, Revdanda, Thal and the Mandwa stretch support a working fleet. Decommissioned or repaired boats give up propellers, shaft couplings, stern gear, sea cocks, pump impellers, portholes and cleats. Marine hardware is deliberately made from metals that survive salt water, which means bronze, gunmetal, brass and sometimes cupro-nickel rather than steel. A single bronze propeller can be worth more than a tonne of mixed iron. Engine blocks and gearbox casings add cast iron and aluminium on top.

Industrial material is the smallest stream and comes mainly from the RCF Thal unit at Thal Vaishet and the smaller industrial pockets around Usar and Vadkhal. Being a fertiliser complex, what comes off it is process plant scrap: pipework, structural steel, tank and vessel sections, pump and valve bodies, plus stainless in the corrosive-service areas. Anything from a fertiliser process line needs the same treatment as chemical plant material anywhere, meaning a buyer will and should ask what it held and how it was cleaned before he talks tonnage.

The Atal Setu Changed the Freight Arithmetic

If you last sold scrap out of Alibaug before 2024, the numbers you are working from are out of date. The Mumbai Trans Harbour Link, formally the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Sewri–Nhava Sheva Atal Setu, opened to traffic on 13 January 2024. It runs roughly 21.8 kilometres from Sewri in South Mumbai to Chirle in Uran taluka, with about 16.5 kilometres of that over water, and it is owned and operated by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority. A joint MMRDA and JICA study put the Sewri to Chirle crossing at under 16 minutes against 61 minutes before.

For a scrap seller the relevant part is what it did to the road route north. Chirle drops you straight onto NH-66, and the run becomes Alibaug to Chirle to Sewri without the Vashi and Panvel crawl, or Alibaug to Chirle and then across to Taloja and the TTC belt. Bridge toll is in the region of ₹200 to ₹250 for a car, more for commercial vehicles, and the saving on the leg is roughly 45 minutes to an hour. The old route through Vadkhal Naka and Kalamboli still exists and Vadkhal is still a bottleneck.

What that means in practice: sending a full sorted load from Alibaug to Navi Mumbai is now a genuinely reasonable proposition rather than a day lost. It does not change the economics on mixed iron, because the price gap on mixed material is still too small to cover any freight at all. It changes them substantially on aluminium, copper, brass and stainless, where the per-kilo difference between a local dealer quote and a proper trade-level buyer runs into hundreds of rupees. That is the load worth putting on a truck.

Alibaug Scrap Rates, by Stream

Two price levels operate here and confusing them is the expensive mistake. The local column is what an Alibaug collector or small dealer pays at the gate, and it is genuinely fair for a 200 kg house clearance because he is absorbing sorting and transport on your behalf. The trade column is what a bulk, GST-invoiced consignment fetches from a buyer supplying refiners and mills. Figures are rupees per kilo, before 18% GST.

Look down the aluminium row. Roughly ₹148 locally against ₹256 at trade level, on material that a villa demolition produces by the hundred kilos. On 400 kg of window sections that difference is about ₹43,000. It is the clearest argument for sorting and consolidating rather than clearing a site in one undifferentiated heap.

The Salt Problem, and How to Read a Corroded Fitting

Coastal Raigad is hard on metal, and salt corrosion is precisely what makes valuable material look worthless. A bronze sea cock that has spent fifteen years in salt water develops a dull green-brown crust that reads, to an untrained eye, as rusty junk. Underneath it is an alloy worth around ₹450 a kilo. Meanwhile mild steel from the same boat genuinely is worth ₹28. Getting those two the wrong way round in a single afternoon is entirely normal here.

Three quick field tests settle most of it. Magnet first. Brass, bronze, gunmetal, copper, aluminium and austenitic stainless will not hold a magnet; mild steel and cast iron will grab hard. That single pass separates the money from the ballast. Then file a clean edge. Under the corrosion, brass shows yellow, bronze and gunmetal show a pinkish or reddish-brown, copper is unmistakably red, aluminium is bright silver-white and light in the hand. Then weigh it in your palm. Aluminium is startlingly light for its size and that alone distinguishes it from everything else in the pile.

One warning specific to marine hardware. Do not scrub or acid-clean anything before selling it. Buyers grade on the metal, not the shine, and aggressive cleaning removes material you are being paid for while telling the buyer nothing he could not work out himself. Knock off loose salt and mud, leave the patina alone.

Salt matters for ferrous too, in a way that costs you at the weighbridge. Coastal steel stored in the open corrodes faster than inland steel, and heavy scale reduces melt yield, so buyers discount for it. Material sitting uncovered near the shoreline through a monsoon takes the double hit of moisture weight and accelerated scaling. If you are holding ferrous for more than a few weeks in Alibaug, get it off the ground and under cover.

Before You Agree a Price

Insist on itemised weights rather than one figure for the whole clearance. This is the single most important thing on the page for Alibaug specifically, because a mixed villa or boat lot weighed as one number gets priced at close to the lowest grade present, and the aluminium and brass inside it effectively become free. A buyer who will not weigh your non-ferrous separately is telling you what he intends to do.

Get the weighing done somewhere you trust. Commercial weighbridges in India must be verified and stamped under the Legal Metrology Act, a regime administered by the Department of Consumer Affairs, and a lapsed certificate is not something you are obliged to accept. For smaller non-ferrous quantities a platform scale you can watch is better than a bridge you cannot.

Photograph everything before it leaves. On a site clearance this takes five minutes and settles nearly every dispute that surfaces later. Then fix payment terms in writing, because 24 to 48 hours is the working standard and anyone asking for 30 days on a first transaction is asking you to fund him. And keep the paperwork straight: a GST-registered buyer reclaims the 18% input credit, which is exactly why he can pay more for documented material than an unregistered one can. That gap is arithmetic rather than generosity.

Finally, a note on timing that applies here more than anywhere else in the district. Alibaug’s construction and refurbishment cycle is seasonal, clustering after the monsoon and ahead of the winter season when owners want work finished. That means October through February is when clearances pile up and when collectors have plenty to choose from. Selling into that glut weakens your position. If you can hold a sorted lot until the flow thins, you will negotiate from a better place.

Who to Call

Alibaug taluka is served by collectors and small dealers working the villa and household trade, mostly around Alibaug town, Poynad and the Revdanda road. For a small clearance they are the practical choice and trucking 200 kg anywhere would be absurd. We are not going to list five dealer names here, because Alibaug does not have five yards operating at scale and a list nobody has verified helps you not at all. For a full villa demolition, a boat breakdown, a hotel refurbishment or anything out of the Thal side, these are the numbers worth having.

Steel Baba

Send photographs and a rough idea of what is there and you get a firm number the same day. We price non-ferrous separately from ferrous as a matter of course, weigh itemised rather than as one lump, invoice with GST and settle inside 48 hours. Villa and site clearances, hotel and resort refurbishments and marine hardware all handled, including the corroded fittings most collectors will not bother to identify. If your lot is small enough that a local collector genuinely serves you better, we will say so rather than waste your day.

Questions Alibaug Sellers Ask

What is the scrap rate in Alibaug today?

It depends far more on material than on grade of iron. Locally, MS grilles and gates fetch ₹28 to ₹31.50/kg, reinforcement bar from concrete ₹25.50 to ₹29/kg and mixed unsorted yard iron ₹24.50 to ₹28/kg. The valuable material is elsewhere: stripped bright copper wiring at ₹790 to ₹860/kg locally, brass fittings ₹385 to ₹445/kg, bronze and gunmetal marine hardware ₹400 to ₹480/kg, aluminium window sections ₹140 to ₹156/kg and stainless 304 at ₹92 to ₹124/kg. Bulk trade-level buyers pay considerably more on all the non-ferrous lines. Figures exclude 18% GST.

I am demolishing a villa in Alibaug. How should I sell the scrap?

Separate it before anyone quotes on it, and insist on itemised weights rather than one figure for the whole clearance. A villa produces two very different things. The ferrous half is grilles, gates, frames, water tanks, roofing sheet and reinforcement bar, worth roughly ₹25 to ₹31/kg. The other half is aluminium window and door sections, copper wiring from the walls, air-conditioning units with copper coils, brass taps and sanitary fittings, and sometimes a stainless kitchen. Aluminium sections alone run ₹140 to ₹156/kg locally and around ₹250 to ₹262 at trade level, so on 400 kg of sections the difference between selling properly and selling as mixed scrap is roughly ₹43,000.

What is boat and marine scrap worth in Alibaug?

More than almost anything else in the district, because marine hardware is deliberately made from metals that survive salt water. Propellers, stern gear, shaft couplings and sea cocks are usually bronze or gunmetal at ₹400 to ₹480/kg locally, cupro-nickel pipework and fittings run ₹470 to ₹610/kg, and marine brass hardware ₹385 to ₹445/kg. Engine blocks and gearbox casings are cast iron and aluminium at much lower rates. A single bronze propeller can be worth more than a tonne of mixed iron, so never let marine fittings go into a general ferrous weight.

How can I tell if a corroded marine fitting is valuable?

Three tests. Run a magnet over it first, because brass, bronze, gunmetal, copper, aluminium and austenitic stainless will not hold a magnet while mild steel and cast iron grab hard. Then file a small clean edge: brass shows yellow, bronze and gunmetal a pinkish or reddish-brown, copper unmistakably red, aluminium bright silver-white. Then weigh it in your hand, since aluminium is startlingly light for its size. One important warning: do not scrub or acid-clean marine fittings before selling. Buyers grade on the metal rather than the shine, and aggressive cleaning removes material you are being paid for.

Has the Atal Setu made it worth trucking scrap from Alibaug to Mumbai?

For non-ferrous, yes. For mixed iron, no. The Atal Setu opened on 13 January 2024, runs about 21.8 km from Sewri to Chirle in Uran taluka, and cut the Sewri to Chirle crossing from around 61 minutes to under 16 according to an MMRDA and JICA study. Chirle feeds straight onto NH-66, so an Alibaug load now reaches Navi Mumbai or the TTC belt without the Vashi and Panvel crawl, saving roughly 45 minutes to an hour. That is worthwhile on aluminium, copper, brass and stainless where the local-to-trade gap runs into hundreds of rupees a kilo. On mixed iron the price gap is still too small to cover any freight at all.

How do I sell scrap from the RCF Thal plant area?

Treat it as process plant material rather than general scrap. A fertiliser complex produces pipework, structural steel, tank and vessel sections, pump and valve bodies and stainless from the corrosive-service areas. Grade it properly before dispatch, keep the stainless separate without exception, and expect a serious buyer to ask what the vessel held and how it was decontaminated before he discusses tonnage. A buyer who asks none of that and offers cash on the spot is a risk you do not want attached to your material. Insist on a GST invoice as well.

Is there a best time of year to sell scrap in Alibaug?

Yes, and it runs opposite to what you might expect. Alibaug’s construction and refurbishment cycle clusters after the monsoon and through the winter season, roughly October to February, when owners want work finished. That is when clearances pile up and collectors have plenty of material to choose between, which weakens your negotiating position. If you can sort a lot and hold it until the flow thins out, you will deal from a stronger place. Storage matters too, since coastal steel left uncovered corrodes faster and takes both a moisture and a scaling deduction.

Rates quoted here are indicative and move daily with metal markets, so confirm before you finalise anything. Sellers with industrial rather than coastal material will find the position further inland set out for Mahad and the Raigad MIDC belt, and anything crossing to the mainland is worth checking against Mumbai and Navi Mumbai first.
